I know I'm late, but hopefully I can shed some light here.

Hard Boiled was originally a Noir term referring to someone who has become emotionally numb to social or government corruption. They were "Soft" but their harsh life experiences have "hardened" them, much like an egg. Someone who is hard boiled is cynical by nature, without being morally compromised. They'll take an "ends justify the means" approach. Think Dick Tracy or Sam Spade. A generalized modern term for this type of Hard Boiled would be Anti-Hero.

However, in 1992, John Woo made a absolutely fantastic film called (you guessed it) Hard Boiled. The main character, "Tequila" Yuen, is a very rough and very angry cop. He hates authority and hates rules. He is completely hard on the outside. However, he has a soft side that he doesn't show often and furthermore, won't allow others to acknowledge. All but one person (The Bartender, Woo) think he's an asshole all the time.

Senor Pink is the second type. The "All but one person" part especially but that's spoilers. ;)
